Creek Farm. He enhanced the value of the property by installing up-to-date equipment and increased the acreage to 180 acres. Although primarily a stock raiser, breeding shorthorn cattle and hogs, Gilbert made a specialty of horses.

Karen (Wermager) and Gilbert Anderson

He was president of the Rock Spring Cooperative Creamery Company, located at the Ole Kjome farm (the original Kjomme farm) until 1913. Like his father, Gilbert was a Republican and took an interest in the public life of the township. In 1910 he was a candidate for county recorder and he also held several school and road offices. The Andersons were charter members of Highland Lutheran School. He was a special friend of Andrew Kjome, the two traveling about the country together as insurance adjustors for a Norwegian insurance company.

In 1931 Gilbert and Karen were appointed steward and stewardess of the Winneshiek County Home, continuing in that position for sixteen and a half years. In 1940 the couple was honored on their forty-seventh wedding anniversary with a surprise party. The entertainment on the occasion was a mock wedding, with nephew Norton Kjome playing the blushing bride and daughter Gertrude Bernatz playing the groom.

When Gilbert retired they moved to Ohio Street. They celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary in 1958. Gilbert passed away 29 Oct 1958. Karen died 27 Jan 1962. They are buried in Highland Lutheran Cemetery in Highland Twp.

Anderson, Bishop H. George and Jutta

Hugh George Anderson was born  in Los Angeles, CA. His parents were Reuben Leroy Anderson (1897-1980) and Frances (Nielsen) Anderson (1899-1980). He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Pasadena.

George graduated from Alhambra High School in 1949, He received a B.A. from Yale University in 1953 and a M.A. (1957) and Ph.D. (1962) from the University of Pennsylvania. George also attended Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia where he earned bachelor of divinity (1956) and master of systematic theology (1958) degrees. George was ordained at Grace Lutheran Church in Alhambra, CA on 10 Jun 1956.

George taught church history at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, SC. He served as the president of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary for 11 years before becoming president of Luther College in Decorah in 1982. He was president of Luther College for 13 years. Under President Anderson's leadership Luther College saw “enrollment growth, major endowment growth, construction of three buildings, renovation of a classroom building and a research laboratory, development of campuswide computer and information networks,

and improvements to numerous facilities.....the college

also expanded and strengthened its academic, international, cocurricular and student life programs, and launched initiative projects to broaden racial ethnic diversity update technology systems, and study academic curriculum.” (Luther Alumni Magazine, Volume 29, Number 2, page 1)

H. George and Jutta Anderson

Throughout his career, H. George Anderson served the Lutheran church by sitting on a number of boards and councils. On 19 Aug 1995 he was elected bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). He assumed the ELCA’s top position on 1 Nov 1995 at its headquarters in Chicago, IL. George and his first wife, Sunny had two children, Erik (b. 1962) and Kristi (b. 1968). Sunny died after a four year battle with cancer about the time George became president of Luther College.
